South Africa’s government says it will donate two million doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to other African countries to boost the continent’s inoculation drive.
A statement issued by the government disclosed that the doses, worth approximately $18m, would be distributed to various African countries over the next year.
According to the statement, the donation embodies South Africa’s solidarity on the continent with whom it is united in fighting an unprecedented threat to public health and economic prosperity.
It added that the only way COVID-19 transmission can be prevented is to protect economies on the continent by successfully immunizing a critical mass of the African population with safe and effective vaccines.
