Bayelsa State Government has urged parents to teach children their local dialects.
The State Commissioner for Ijaw National Affairs, Patrick Erasmus, said the state government was working to institutionalize the teaching of the Ijaw language in public and private schools in the state.
Erasmus noted that about 200 Izon teachers had been trained to teach Ijaw language in primary schools across the local government areas.
The Commissioner added that the government was motivated by the need to preserve Ijaw language, and other languages spoken by communities.
