At least 35 civilians have been killed as vehicles carrying supplies in Burkino Faso’s restive northern region struck an improvised explosive device.
According to the governor of the northeastern Sahel region, Rodolphe Sorgo, the explosion, which wounded 37 others, occurred as the military-escorted convoy traveled along Bourzanga to Djibo road.
Sorgo noted that the escorts quickly secured the perimeter and took measures to help the victims.
The tri-border area has been central to a spiraling security crisis in the wider region over the last 10 years, and has seen increasing attacks by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL, ISIS.
