The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF, has warned that the number of pregnant women and nursing mothers suffering from under nutrition has increased by 25 percent in Nigeria and other African countries.
According to a report by UNICEF, more than one billion women and adolescent girls suffer from under nutrition which leaves them underweight and of short stature.
The report noted that most of them are in the world’s poorest regions, with South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa constituting 68 percent of women and adolescent girls who are underweight and 60 percent of those suffering from anemia.
It added that these nutritional deficiencies have an impact on the well-being of the women.
