Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, who is nominated for a Grammy, has criticized the arguments made to legalize the carrying of firearms by nationals.
Nigeria was not yet ready for citizen gun ownership, according to the Afrobeat musician.
The rich killing the poor at will, he claimed, was the only outcome of such a legislation.
In a recent Instagram live conversation with followers, Kuti stated: “I don’t think our culture is ready for us to say we want to put firearms in anybody’s hands. The first thing it implies is that wealthy kids would kill impoverished kids everywhere they go. They would just grab guns and kill them. It would indeed occur that way.
He went on to say that politicians are discussing the legalization of weapons not out of concern for your safety but rather because they want to profit from the trade. Guns are not necessary for Nigerians to feel safe. Politicians can hire enough people to secure the nation if they truly care about protecting Nigerians.
