Inibehe Effiong, a human rights and public interest attorney, has filed a petition with Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, asking him to find and discipline a group of Army men who, in his opinion, assaulted ASP Edet Inyang, a police officer.
Effiong revealed on his X handle that On December 9, 2023, Inyang was tortured by a mysterious gang of Army troops at a store near the Nigerian Army’s 63 Brigade in Asaba, Delta State. The policeman had gone there to buy some stuff for his own use.
News reports state that Nigerian Army soldiers were recently advised by President Bola Tinubu not to launch reprisal attacks against law enforcement or any other civilian population on the basis of any provocation.
Speaking about soldiers’ violations of their human rights in a 2017 exclusive interview with reporters, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, the former director of Army Public Relations, stated that the Army will not tolerate violations of human rights by any individual or group of individuals, depending on the situation.
