Iziaq Salako,The Minister of State for Environment, announced in Abuja that the ministry, in partnership with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, will be closely monitoring the plans of oil companies – both local and international – to end routine gas flaring by 2030.
This move aims to reduce methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that poses a threat to our climate and well-being.
Salako emphasized the importance of tackling methane emissions, especially in the oil and gas sector, to not only combat climate change but also to promote public health, food security, and economic development.
The government’s collaborative efforts have resulted in the development of methane guidelines, with plans for regular reviews to ensure companies align with the goal to end gas flaring by 2030.
