Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adams Abuh, urged 20 governors to promptly back the establishment of state police to address rising security threats like banditry and kidnapping. Abuh emphasized the pressing need for federal and state governments to act swiftly in response to the country’s security challenges.
Abuh also noted the inadequate tools and resources hampering the timely response of security agents to emergencies. He pointed out issues such as understaffing, lack of functional vehicles, logistical hurdles, insufficient funding, and poor remuneration contributing to the delayed response time of security agencies to distress calls.
Despite growing calls for state police to tackle the surge in crimes, only a few states have expressed readiness to embrace this approach.
