The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has issued a recall for Benylin Paediatrics Syrup made by Johnson & Johnson. Recent lab tests revealed dangerously high levels of Diethylene glycol, causing acute oral toxicity. NAFDAC announced this on its website.
Benylin Paediatric syrup, meant for cough relief and allergy treatment in children aged two to 12, was found to contain Diethylene glycol, which is toxic and potentially fatal when ingested. The affected batch, with number 329304, was manufactured in May 2021 in South Africa and is set to expire this April.
NAFDAC urges caution among importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers, advising immediate discontinuation of sales or use of the recalled product, and have promptly instructed Johnson & Johnson to initiate the recall process, with details to be shared on the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System.
