In a recent statement by the Minster of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, following the Federal Executive Council’s approval to eliminate exemptions for airport tollgate users, President Bola Tinubu and Vice President, Kashim Shettima will start paying tollgate fees whenever they use airports in Nigeria.
The approval came after Keyamo presented a memorandum to the council, arguing that the government was losing over 82% of potential revenue from the e-tags that provide access to the tollgates.
He also revealed that the initial proposal exempted only the president and vice president, but President Tinubu overruled it, directing that both he and the vice president should be included among those required to pay.
Keyamo who disclosed this at the post-FEC media briefing, expressed regret that wealthy VIPs who should pay are those that have not been paying, while only poor people have been charged for using the tollgates, a situation that must stop.
