The Nigerian Army was criticized by pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore for closing Banex Plaza in the Federal Capital Territory after some soldiers were attacked over the weekend.
The attack on some soldiers last weekend, which the Army said was the result of a bunch of thugs, prompted them to close the square.

He claimed that a large number of these military personnel had been exposed as having committed horrible acts.
