French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a snap parliamentary election following substantial gains by far-right parties in the recent European elections.
The National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, secured more than double the votes compared to Macron’s centrist alliance.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled for 30 June and 7 July, although Macron’s position as president is not directly at risk.
In the broader European context, despite the rise of far-right parties in France, Italy, Austria, and Germany, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that “the centre is holding,” as 360 million eligible voters participated in electing 720 new Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
