Traditional rulers from the South-East have renewed their call for peace, security, and unity in the region.
The appeal was made during a meeting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Tuesday, which was attended by notable monarchs, including the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe as the gathering provided an opportunity for the leaders to discuss challenges facing the region and explore solutions.
The traditional rulers stressed that peace and unity are essential for the development of the South-East, expressing concern over the rising insecurity in the area.
Chairman of the Imo State Council of Ndi Eze, E.C. Okeke, alongside his Abia counterpart, Linus Nto-Mba, commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his administration’s efforts to promote peace and development also acknowledging the strong relationship between the state government and traditional institutions.
In his remarks, Governor Otti raised concerns about community unrest stemming from disputes over the selection of traditional rulers as he cautioned against imposing monarchs based on financial influence, emphasizing that due process must be followed in such matters while highlighting the crucial role traditional institutions play in supporting democracy.
