In a joint effort, Microsoft and the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday have seized over 100 websites believed to be used by Russian groups for cyber fraud in the U.S.
The tech company revealed that between January 2023 and August 2024, a group known as Star Blizzard targeted more than 30 civil society entities, including journalists and NGOs as those cybercriminals employed fake email accounts to steal sensitive information from Americans.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco emphasized that the U.S. will continue to expose and disrupt such Russian operations as Microsoft also noted the persistent nature of Star Blizzard, which carefully studies its targets to pose as trusted contacts while the group may rebuild, this action comes at a critical moment, with concerns about foreign interference in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
