The police in Imo State have arrested a secondary school teacher, Blessing Emmanuel, for allegedly abusing her 12-year-old stepdaughter, Amarachi Emmanuel.
Amarachi was taken into custody on Tuesday by the Owerri Police Area Command following a report from Chidiebube Okeoma, an Owerri-based journalist and activist.
Two local women, Eunice and Amarachi, informed the activist after they saw the girl selling sachet water on the streets of Owerri, with visible signs of abuse on her body.
A video shared by Okeoma on social media showed the girl with multiple injuries from machete cuts and beatings inflicted by her stepmother.
Okeoma confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that the girl has been admitted to Umuguma General Hospital in Owerri for intensive medical treatment.
