The Federal Government has announced plans to invest $2 billion in a project to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable across Nigeria.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made the announcement on Monday during a facility tour of the vandalized Digital Innovation Park in Kano.
This initiative aims to expand the country’s fiber optic capacity from 35,000 kilometers to 125,000 kilometers, enhancing the terrestrial fiber optic backbone in Nigeria.
Tijani emphasized that this investment will deliver meaningful connectivity to communities, enabling schools, hospitals, government institutions, and businesses to thrive in a digitally connected environment.
He stressed that the initiative will also accelerate growth across critical sectors of the economy, including education, health, and agriculture.
The minister further noted that in today’s world, technology remains the key to unlocking productivity and driving the diversification of Nigeria’s economy.
