Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dispatched two rescue planes to the Netherlands on Friday following reports of Israeli football fans injured in violent clashes in Amsterdam.
Netanyahu expressed serious concern over the incident, urging Dutch authorities to take swift action against the rioters and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens.
The Prime Minister’s office did not specify what triggered the violence, but Dutch media reported that altercations erupted on Thursday between fans during a European League match between Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Ajax.
Numerous fights and acts of vandalism reportedly took place in the city center, with Dutch police deploying a large number of mobile units and calling in reinforcements as the Israeli embassy in the United States stated that hundreds of Maccabi fans were ambushed after the game, calling the incident a targeted attack on Israeli citizens while Dutch police have confirmed the arrest of 57 people.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has also asked Dutch authorities to assist Israeli citizens in safely reaching the airport from their hotels. Meanwhile, Amsterdam police remain on high alert, noting recent incidents, including the removal of a Palestinian flag from a building.
A pro-Palestinian rally originally planned near the stadium was relocated by the Amsterdam city council for security reasons.
