In Niger State, a High Court has ruled in favor of Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Emmanuel Igwe, a legal practitioner, ordering the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to pay him N5 million in damages. The court also awarded N200,000 as litigation costs and five percent monthly interest on the judgment sum.
Mr. Igwe filed the suit over alleged violations of his fundamental human rights, citing an incident where he was reportedly kicked and beaten with sticks and fists inside the NSCDC’s state office in Minna. The court held that such actions violated Igwe’s right to dignity as protected by the Constitution and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
The ruling highlights the importance of upholding human rights and holding accountable those who violate them. It serves as a reminder of the legal protections in place to safeguard individuals against unlawful actions, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for human dignity.
