In a recent statement, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, addressed concerns over challenges facing Nigerian universities, attributing some issues to underage students unfamiliar with university life.
He made these remarks following his assessment of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across various centres in Abuja, also commending the low level of malpractice during the ongoing UTME while highlighting the impact of technology in ensuring its integrity.
However, he expressed concern over the age of university applicants, noting that some are too young to grasp the demands of higher education reiterating the need for 18 years to be the minimum age for university admission and urged parents to refrain from pushing their children into higher education prematurely, emphasizing the importance of maturity in managing university life.
