The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, has expressed concerns over the failure of the government to issue relevant circulars as regards the increase in retirement age to 70 years for doctors, and 65 years for other healthcare workers.
In the communique issued after their National Executive Council meeting, MDCAN also criticized the persistent inability to address the shortfall in salaries of clinical lecturers, or honorary consultants, due to non-payment of their salaries under the CONMESS structure.
The communique mentioned the low salaries of members across many states’ health institutions, and also stated that the recent federal government policy of “No leave of absence” for healthcare workers is discriminatory and a violation of their fundamental human rights.
MDCAN further added that despite their several unanswered demands, members have cooperated with governments at all levels by remaining committed to providing healthcare delivery to the population, urging the government to reciprocate the good gesture by giving due attention to their demands.
