Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested five suspected kidnappers for the alleged murder of 29-year-old Smart Nwashiri after collecting a ransom of N200,000.
The Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, disclosed this while parading the suspects—Goodluck Ojieh (37, gang leader), Lucky Enagbonmien (37), Victory Okoro (32), Sunday Ernest (32), and Daniel Udi (29)—before the media in Benin City.
The suspects, who are from Delta State but reside in Edo State, lured the victim to their hideout in the Ologbo community in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area under the pretense of selling vehicle parts.
They then kidnapped him and demanded a ransom of N1 million, ultimately settling for N200,000 while the suspects used a dagger to kill Nwashiri and buried him in a shallow grave to conceal their crime.
The police tracked and arrested the suspects in Delta State after an extensive investigation and recovered the victim’s corpse and motorcycle.
The suspects have confessed to the crime and will be charged in court once the investigation is completed.
