The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed over N15.6 billion to the families and next of kin of 5,225 slain police officers between 2023 and 2024.
This was revealed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, during a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.
Egbetokun explained that the disbursement covers outstanding insurance payments for the periods 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 also highlighting that a total of N9.85 billion was distributed to 3,077 families on six separate occasions between July 2023 and June 2024.
At the event, cheques amounting to N5.75 billion were presented to the families of deceased officers who lost their lives in service to the nation while Egbetokun noted that this is the largest disbursement of its kind in the history of the Nigeria Police Force, reflecting the commitment to easing the burdens faced by the families of fallen officers.
While acknowledging that the payments cannot replace the loss of loved ones, the IGP expressed hope that the funds would offer some support as the affected families navigate the challenges ahead.
