The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday has ordered the suspension of monthly allocations to Rivers State by the Federal Government.
This directive, issued by Joyce Abdulmalik, also restrains the Central Bank of Nigeria from allowing Rivers State to access funds from the consolidated revenue account.
The judgement came in response to a suit filed by the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as Defendants in the case include the Central Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and other Rivers State officials.
The plaintiffs argued that Governor Fubara failed to comply with a court order to present the 2024 Appropriation Bill to the Amaewhule-led Assembly faction.
A previous ruling had recognized Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker and invalidated the budget presented to an opposing Assembly faction as they also claimed the governor’s withdrawals from the state’s consolidated revenue fund violated the Constitution.
