Flash floods and landslides kill 16 people in Indonesia

At least 16 people have been killed after flash floods and a landslide struck Indonesia’s Sumatra island over the weekend.

The disaster is reported to have been triggered by torrential rains  causing rivers to burst their banks and sending mud, rocks, and trees tumbling down a mountain, washing away homes and farmland.

According to a report from foreign officials on Monday, six people remain missing as rescue operations continue, with rescuers still searching for four missing individuals, including two children.

Rescue teams also recovered six bodies late on Sunday after a landslide buried two houses and a cottage, while nine survivors, injured in the disaster, managed to escape.

The Indonesian military has been deployed alongside rescue workers to support relief efforts in the affected areas.
