Bill to Tackle Production of Counterfeit Goods Scale Second Reading in Senate

The Senate on Wednesday passed through second reading a Bill for an Act to introduce measures aimed against the manufacturing, production, possession, and distribution of counterfeit goods in Nigeria.

The bill Sponsored by a Senator representing Ogun Central district, Ibikunle Amosun, also provides for a criminal investigation into counterfeiting and seeks to make the prosecution of such crime less cumbersome.

Amosun explained that the proposed legislation was imperative as existing legislation have largely been limited and weak in enforcement mechanism.

The bill which was read the second time, was referred to the Committee on Trade and Investment to report back within four weeks.
