After a quick return to Stamford Bridge, the former Anderlecht prodigy is now looking forward to being part of an English title challenge, something he was unable to do with West Bromwich Albion, Everton, or Manchester United.
“I didn’t want to go behind Inter’s back because they helped me out,” Lukaku said in an interview with HLN. “I was in a deep hole at Manchester United and I could only go for Chelsea.”
“I finally believed Chelsea were real when they made their third offer, which was 100 million euros, then 105 million euros, then 105 million euros plus Marcos Alonso, then 110 million euros plus Davide Zappacosta, but Inter politely declined.”
Lukaku had a fantastic season with the Italian powerhouse, lifting the Scudetto in 2020/21, but he believes it was the perfect time for him to leave, with Chelsea’s lure being too powerful to reject.
