Libya’s East-based Parliament has appointed former Interior Minister Fathi Bashaga as the new Prime Minister.
The Tobruk-based House of Representatives said its decision followed the failure of the incumbent Prime Minister, Abdul Dbeibah, to hold national elections in December.
This came hours after an apparent assassination attempt on Dbeibah, whose vehicle was sprayed with small-arms fire in the capital, Tripoli.
The Parliament’s move is expected to deepen divisions between rival factions.
