The Chairman, Cross River Forestry Commission, Tony Ndiandeye, has blamed unemployment for two per cent depletion of forest reserves annually in the state.
Ndiandeye disclosed this while commemorating World Forest Day, 2022, in calabar, the state capital.
He noted that indigenes engage in illegal logging activities, which contributes to depleting the forest reserves.
The chairman added that graduates from the nation’s tertiary institutions, who were from the forest bearing communities, saw the forest as an alternative to employment.
The WFD is observed annually on March 21, to increase awareness about the role forests play in sustaining lives on earth.
