In their ongoing fight against illegal oil bunkering in Abia State, the Nigerian Army, conducted a raid on illegal mining sites in Obeaku, Ukwa West Local Government Area on Monday evening, resulting in the arrest of 17 suspects.
This is following a previous raid last Friday at Isimmiri Waterside, where seven suspects were apprehended.
Speaking at the site, which housed over 15 illegal refineries, Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, who led the operation, emphasized the environmental degradation caused by these activities.
He also stated that the military has been actively destroying and removing equipment used in the illegal operations to prevent further access.
Dada stressed the negative impact of these operations on both the national economy and the local environment, as the scale of the illegal activities is significant, with an estimated 5 million litres of crude oil being siphoned.
