The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has raised alarm over a significant surge in cholera cases across the country in 2024.
According to the latest epidemiological report published on the centre’s website on Monday, suspected cases have risen by 220% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
As of epidemiological week 39, Nigeria had recorded 10,837 suspected cases and 359 deaths, marking a 239% increase in fatalities from 2023.
Also, the NCDC has activated a national Cholera Technical Working Group to coordinate response efforts and monitor outbreaks across the country as cholera cases continue to rise.
In the past week, 198 new suspected cases were reported, leading to 15 more deaths across five states.
