The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has demanded the resignation of the leadership of the National Assembly for failing to counter President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
This call was made in a communiqué signed by its chairman and secretary, Oladipo Olaitan and Justice Faloye, respectively, and issued at the end of its monthly meeting held on Tuesday at the Ijebu-Ode residence of its immediate past leader, Ayo Adebanjo.
Afenifere recalled that the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF, comprising Afenifere, the Middle Belt Leaders Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and PANDEF, had in a statement on 19 March 2025 condemned the declaration and called on the president to reverse it.
The group stated that SMBLF had also urged the National Assembly to overturn the president’s order, which it described as despotic and ominous.
It criticised the removal of a democratically elected administration in favour of a military administrator, likening it to the country’s undemocratic past.
