Tragedy has struck the community of Egbu in Owerri North LGA, Imo State, as four young men lost their lives while attempting to clean out a sewage pit in Umunwokoji Umuayalu village.
The incident, which has left the residents in deep mourning, took a mysterious turn as each of the four men entered the pit in succession but failed to emerge alive.
According to reports, the first worker entered the pit to remove waste but was unable to climb out. In a desperate attempt to rescue him, three other men entered one after the other, but all tragically lost their lives under unclear circumstances and the bodies of the victims have since been recovered and taken to the mortuary.
The exact cause of their deaths remains unknown. However, environmental engineer Sunday Ihekire stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols during such hazardous activities, calling the incident a tragic reminder of the dangers involved.
Adding to the sorrow, a resident revealed that one of the victims was a newly married man who left behind a one-month-old baby while the community is now grappling with the loss and the devastating impact of this unfortunate event.
